OK, SquidCache is tried and true, been around since the beginning of time (it supports Gopher for christs sake!)
But it was never REALLY supposed to be an HTTP Accelerator (reverse proxy to you old skool admins)
Varnish on the other hand IS supposed to be a HTTP Accelerator, originally written by Poul-Henning Kamp (hey, we LOVE PHK here, the guy did the MD5 password hash code for FreeBSD and is an avid Beerware License developer, we LOVE BEERWARE!). Varnish tends to have a noticeably smaller footprint than Squid, but also has a VERY noticeable increase in performance. (We don’t run it here yet, but I run it elsewhere)
Varnish has its own configuration language, which is really more of a high level programming language (think sendmail.cf macros, only easier to read/write), the cool part of the language is it gets converted to C, compiled, and loaded as a .so (shared object for you non-*NIX people).
Varnish has only been around since ‘06, but its on v2.0.4, which is pretty good for OSS.
If you serve a lot of static content (images, CSS, javascript files, etc), Give Varnish a shot, you might just make your end-users happier.

The news rattling around the web today is Starbucks new trial, they dropped the Starbucks name at a store in Seattle and went with 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea.
Sounds like a quaint little mom & pop corner coffee shop right? Except they’re serving BEER and Wine!
Lets just hope they DON’T actually try to make this a microbrewery.
Ok, so I really doubt they’re brewing their own, I mean, who wants a double whip no foam mint mochiato pilsner?
